The Pop Culture Lover's Guide to New York City:

The locations of famous movie and TV scenes, album covers, art works, book scenes, and other celebrated spots of New York City pop culture history in the The Pop Culture Capital of the World

by PopSpotsNYC.com - the Pop Culture website

Available as a mobile APP for cellphone and iPad, or as a book perhaps 8.5" x 5+1/2* inches for easy portability by tourists and pop culture enthusiasts. (*i.e. 8+1/2 x 11 maps unfolded)

MAIN OUTLINE

6 MAIN CHAPTERS: Each with an Introduction and 6 Maps.

1) MOVIE, TV, and THEATER
2) MUSIC
3) PAINTING, SCULPTURE, ARCHITECTURE, and DESIGN
4) FICTION AND LITERATURE
5) NEW YORK and U.S. HISTORY
6) TOURIST ATTRACTIONS and STORES

MAPS: The maps in each section.

DOWNTOWN (Below Canal Street)
   (The Financial District, Tribeca, Chinatown)
THE VILLAGES AND SOHO: (Canal to 14th Street)
(Greenwich Village, East Village, Lower East Side, Soho, Little Italy)
LOWER MIDTOWN (14-34th streets)
(Chelsea, Garment District, Murray Hill, Gramercy Park)
MIDTOWN (34-59th streets)
(Chelsea, Garment District, Murray Hill, Gramercy Park)
UPTOWN (59-125th streets)
(Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Central Park, Lower Harlem, East Harlem) • OTHER BOROUGHS selected sites)
(Brooklyn, The Bronx, Staten Island, Queens)

The Map Divisions: Manhattan will be broken into 6 searchable sections, each with roughly the same number of pop culture spots.

A Sample Map: The Village: (Double-Click to Enlarge)

The Book: Each map will be a 2-page spread. All the sights will be listed with 2 or 3 words and a number referring back to a longer explanation. (i.e. #34 Wait Until Dark).

(Note: I find the Japanese to make the most realistic maps. However, they look a little cluttered to us because they repeat everything in Japanese lettering for their readers. Try to overlook the red markings. Thanks.)

The App: When you tap on a map it enlarges over ten times its size.. The viewer can zoom into each section so they can see the different locations as they walk through that area of town. Users move the map with the tip of their fingers.

Double click the following map to see the map enlarge.

Some PopSpots on the map will have photos.

(These maps are from an early edition of the app City Maps, done as a test. Each photo will also have a small number in order to relate to the accompanying text.

The maps will show the exact part of the street where the location is, not just a street corner.

By clicking on the text, the viewer will be taken to a page with a larger picture and more explanation.

The Maps will focus on the red areas in the map below - because that's where the tourists go. (The red spots, in a map from Flickr, are where tourists, according to their camera's GPS, took photos when visiting NYC.)

Alternate App navigation:

Alternatively, the user can navigate to a particular subject, then find that subject on the map. This guide from a NYC tourist guidebook, shows a somewhat similar sample navigation.

Based on the navigation above, here's what the PopSpots Guide might look like (an early version - done with a 4-part map, not a 6-part map).

ADDITIONAL APP FEATURES

Certain celebrities and films are so well known they deserve their own "walking tour guide." I refer to these as the "In the footsteps of.." maps because a visitor can stand in the exact places where their favorite actor or musician stood.

These will be specialized pages on the app that you can click to to see everything to do with many of your your favorite stars or movies in Manhattan.
